The proposed school spending is desperately needed regardless of the current economic climate and it is a shame it has taken such a crisis to get some funds to our schools. I just hope the Federal funds don't absolve the State Governments' of their fundamental responsibility to provide decent facilities for our schools. I hope the States' don't see the federal money as a way they can then siphon some of their school maintenance budgets into other projects. As for the cash payments, if I understand things right, to save the economy (and jobs), we need to get people spending and keep them spending. If that is so - $950 to deserving folks should stimulate the economy for all of ........ ooooh - a week! If that. For those not responsible enough to reduce their household debt, that money will go in one sitting. Would it not be far more sensible to get people spending, maybe in smaller amounts, over a sustained period - something you would possibly gain by bringing forward the tax cuts?? Not that I want to agree with Turnbull!

Comment on Network TEN - Meet the Press - 8 Feb 09

To get people spending and keep them spending, I agree with Turnbull's call to bring forward tax cuts rather than a one-off handout that will be spent (either on debt or just spent) in seconds. But why reject the infrastructure spending. Regardless of the economic climate, it is infrastructure that is desperately needed. If this spending will force the States' to live up to their responsibilities - and highlight their previous failures, I think it should be passed - as long as it is accountable and there is no way the States' can squander it as they have done with our GST money.

Comment on Channel 9 - Today on Sunday - Laurie Oakes Political Interview - 8 Feb 09

Not that I wouldn't like $950 - if I understand things right, to save the economy (and jobs), we need to get people spending and keep them spending.
